Drug Name:Mefenamic Acid
Drug Class:Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug (NSAID)
Mechanism of Action:
  • Inhibits the production of prostaglandins by blocking the action of cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes
  • Prevents the formation of thromboxane A2, a potent vasoconstrictor and platelet aggregator
Use:
  • Relief of mild to moderate pain associated with menstrual cramps, headache, dental pain, musculoskeletal pain, and postoperative pain
  • Reduction of fever
Side Effects:
  • Gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain
  • Dizziness, headache, and drowsiness
  • Allergic reactions such as rash, itching, and swelling
Contraindications:
  • Hypersensitivity to mefenamic acid or other NSAIDs
  • History of asthma, urticaria, or other allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
  • Active peptic ulcer disease or gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Severe renal impairment
